SENIOR INSTRUCTOR MELISSA McPETERS

When 3rd Dan Melissa McPeters first came to San Francisco, she sought to join a gym, but was kicked out of Crunch for kicking patrons. Instead, she made a new goal of finding a martial arts school. What she found was HRK, and since that foggy August of 1999, she has been a gold member. When asked what she likes most about TKD, she replied that kicks and forging new friendships with the friendly staff and patrons are her favorites. She claims that her least favorite thing about TKD is not being able to train as often as she would like.

• Hates: She hates that doboks are not designed for women’s bodies and dreams of designing one and quitting her day job.
• Favorite Martial Artist: Chuck Norris – for setting low standards for kicking height and flexibility.
• Least Favorite Martial Artist: Jackie Chan – for setting too high standards
• Least Favorite Martial Arts Book: Tae Kwon Do for Dummies
• Favorite Martial Arts Book: The Book of 5 Rings
• Dream: To teach TKD to the Zapatistas in exchange for handcrafted goods and Spanish language conversation.

These days, Melissa can be regularly been found in Taekwondo class, as well as teaching 9th grade literacy at a charter high school in Richmond (the city, not the neighborhood). She has had a long-standing riff with Coach Carter because his movie got out first. When not working or training, she is dreaming of not working.
