KICKBOXING FAQ

kb
WHAT IS KICKBOXING? Kickboxing is an informal modern martial art that combines the basics of boxing (hand techniques and movement) with the powerful kicks of Muay Thai and Taekwondo. Kickboxing techniques are practical and useful, and each class is a full-body workout.

ARE THE CLASSES SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS? Our program includes FOUR Beginners Kickboxing classes each week, and beginners receive detailed instruction on the correct mechanics of each of the basic punching and kicking techniques. First-time students are recommended to come to our Monday and Wednesday Beginners' Kickboxing classes, as an Assistant Instructor is available during each of these classes to work with them.

HOW MANY CLASSES ARE THERE? We offer ten Kickboxing classes per week - see the Class Schedule for details. Note that the 7.30pm classes are mainly for beginners, although all classes are open to students of all levels. Kickboxing students are also encouraged to attend the Just For Kicks classes every Wednesday lunchtime from 12.15pm-1.15pm, and every Friday evening from 6.00pm-7.15pm.

DO YOU TEACH AEROBIC KICKBOXING? No, it's not aerobic Kickboxing, but it's not Muay Thai either. You can expect to learn American Kickboxing, with a heavy emphasis on boxing and hand skills. Expect plenty of power punching and kicking, and some contact drills in the more advanced classes, while getting a highly enjoyable and very physical workout.

WHAT ARE KICKBOXING CLASSES LIKE? A typical class consists of two or three rounds of jumping rope to warm up, followed by a couple of rounds of shadow boxing and a series of stretches. We often do calisthenics and heavy bag work, then spend time on partner drills, which may involve using focus mitts, Thai pads and/or kicking shields. We usually finish with more callisthenics, abs and pushups. It's a great way to spend an hour.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? An intro Kickboxing class, with a free pair of Revgear handwraps, costs only $10.00 cash. If you would like to sign up for a membership, Kickboxing costs between $75.00 and $105.00 per month (call or email for more details). With all of our memberships you can attend as many classes each week as you wish, and can also use the gym facilities whenever we are open. Note also that we do not charge any additional sign-up fees!

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED? You should wear sweats or shorts, and a tee shirt or vest. You can work out barefoot, or wear martial arts or wrestling shoes. To be fully equipped, you will need hand wraps, gloves, a jump rope and a bottle of water - all of which we offer for sale.

If you would like more information about any of our classes, please call Master Steve Rapport at 415.495.2025, or send him an email, and arrange to come in for a tour and to take a class.
